San Joaquin County Historical Society & Museum

Erickson Building

This building houses many exhibit galleries: Native American Gallery, Tope Exhibit, Textile Exhibit, and the changing Children's Gallery.  Currently the Children's Gallery theme is "Horse Power".

Children's Gallery- Interactive exhibit where children are invited to pretend and explore the impact of horses in early farming.

Tope Exhibit -Joseph C. Tope was born in    Indiana  in 1891 and eventually moved to    Stockton  where he was a lawyer by trade and died in 1977. An avid collector he accumulated hundreds of ethnic objects and willed many of these to our institution. It is because of Tope’s foresight and generosity that we can exhibit objects as seen below.  For a limited time 16 Pre-Columbian pieces from the Tope Collection will be on display the Native American Gallery.

Top: Arizona - Bird Vessel, Hopi Pueblo c. 1940

Bottom: Arizona - Rain bird jug, Tularosa 1100 AD

Native American Gallery - The theme's focus is on San Joaquin County's first people, the Yokuts and the Miwoks.
